The river Cam lows through the centre of Cambridge following a broad loop, it is a slow flowing shallow river which lends itself perfectly to the use of punts, wide, low boats with a shallow draught that can be pushed along using a long pole that reaches down the river bottom. You can hire one and propel yourself in whichever direction you want to go or hire a guide who do the hard work (not that hard actually) while delivering an informative talk and description of the historical places passing by and their stories.
